The BETA National Equestrian Survey

The BETA National Equestrian Survey

The economic value of the UK equestrian sector alone stands at £5 billion! Come to BETA International and tap into this highly lucrative market.

The equestrian world in a nutshell. . .

The National Equestrian Survey 2023 reveals the general good health of the sector which is illustrated by our estimated total annual spending of £5 billion on goods and services which has never been higher.

Equestrian activity in Britain
• Regular riders (those riding at least once a month for the last 12 months) remains at similar levels to 2019 at 1.82M riders.
Around 9 in 10 continue to rider for pleasure.
• There are an estimated 6 million British households that contain at least one ex-rider (up from 5M in 2019). The reasons for stopping riding focus on cost, age (of rider) and access
to horses

Regular riding in Great Britain

There appears considerable growth in riding amongst 25-44 year old riders (up 30%), compared to a similar level drop amongst 45+ year old riders (down 20%)

• Barriers preventing a return to riding focus on financial factors, availability of (free) time and access/availability of horses and
somewhere to ride

Horse ownership in Britain
• There are now an estimated 331K horse-owning households in Britain (down from 374K in 2019)
• The estimated horse population of Britain stands at 726K (down from 841K in 2019)

Equestrian economy of Britain
• The economic value of the equestrian sector (in terms of spending on equestrian products and services) is now an estimated £5BN per annum (up from £4.7BN in 2019)
• The impact of the current cost-of-living crisis is expected to be felt with 2 in 3 equestrian consumers expecting to have to spend more on the necessary items to maintain care of their horse(s). As many as 8 in 10 expect to have to make cost savings in their equestrian spending.
